Rastatt to re-open earlier than planned

The state-owned railway enterprise Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced that the Rhine Valley railway line through Baden-Baden in southern Germany is set to re-open on 2 October – five days earlier than planned.
This important section of the entire European railway network has been closed since 12 August, on account of an accident at a tunnel building-site.
"Every day counts for our customers from both the cargo and passenger segment. The earlier were can re-open the line, the better," said DB's head of infrastructure, Ronald Pofalla. A tunnel under construction near Rastatt had caused subsidence under the line, on account of water entering the section, which caused the line to be closed to rail traffic. DB said that, in cooperation with the construction firms concerned, they had managed to optimise the logistics of the remedial work, and thus finish the repairs ahead of schedule.
